The main characteristic of these systems is that the aeration time of the wastewater and activated sludge in the biological basin (hydraulic retention time and sludge age) is kept much longer compared to standard activated sludge systems.
Thanks to this long duration, the microorganisms in the system not only consume the organic pollutants (carbonaceous compounds) in the water, but also digest themselves (endogenous phase), minimizing the amount of waste sludge produced.
Moreover, the system also performs nitrogen removal (nitrification and denitrification) processes with the same stability.

The system consists of an equalization basin, an extended aeration biological basin, a final settling basin, and sludge dewatering units.
